GP staking: what’s your flavour?

As GP staking becomes more mainstream, three distinct strategies have emerged. Ed Stubbings, managing director of Ternion and founder of the British Emerging Manager Institute, dishes out the differences.
GP staking is a relatively new concept in the industry. And while houses including Blue Owl Capital have been around for more than a decade (Dyal Capital, the predecessor firm to Blue Owl’s GP Strategic Capital platform was founded in 2010), until recently, these deals have only featured large-cap firms.
But, as GP staking becomes more commonplace in Europe and in the mid-market, as one would expect in any maturing strategy, distinctive deal types are emerging.
For Ed Stubbings, managing director of Ternion and founder of the British Emerging Manager Institute, it’s surprising that GP staking didn’t develop sooner.
