The continued push to open up private capital funds has seen some compelling innovations in the market in recent years – notably the ELTIF and LTAF fund structures – but given the liquidity demands of retail investors, is there an easier way?
There’s no doubt that the opening up of private capital funds train is running. With the fundraising market in a depressed state (according to Preqin, global private equity fundraising shrank by 11.5% by total value in 2023, the lowest total since 2017, while the 1,936 funds closed was the smallest annual number since at least 2015), fund managers are unsurprisingly on the hunt for new sources of capital. And both retail investors and high net worths are proving to be attractive and relatively untapped pools.
