What are the most common mistakes people make when thinking about their next move?
The biggest one is probably chasing money. I admire people who are upfront about compensation being a driver, it’s honest. But I’ve seen too many good candidates walk away from strong roles because they’re impatient for a title bump or a pay rise.
Take the number two in a thriving business who jumps ship for a doomed start-up just to get the “CFO” title, and then the whole thing falls apart. Sometimes staying in a great business, even if you’re not in the number one seat, can set you up for far more success in the long run.
