According to columnist and HR specialist Laura Callahan, new talent has never enjoyed job security and therefore has no job loyalty. With this cohort increasingly being headhunted, she provides practical advice on how to retain junior team members.

Loyalty is not what it used to be. Whilst a lot of us joined a company expecting to climb the ladder and, if not ourselves, our parents probably stayed with an employer for decades (my father did 35 years!), However, the younger generation has grown up surrounded by economic uncertainty and job security has never been part of their common vernacular.

You may be surprised to hear that 50% of graduates move roles within the first two years. That’s a lot of investment wasted!

They are faithful and devoted to their values and principles (more on that in the next edition), but at work, they get that neither party owes each other anything and are comfortable that no job is forever.
